Yeah, the manual hub nuts need at least 150 ft/lb. Auto hubs are a totally different breed.

Tech Advisor?

Try 35 ft-lbs to preload while tightening the wheel. Then back off 1/4 turn and tighten to 12-14 (don't quote me on that) and insert lock key.

Nice try.:bsflag: (not you,Jspafford)

i believe thats for the manual hubs. and its 16lb/ft after preload. then the outer locknut is 150lb/ft for manual hubs.

Are you guys f'n with me?
I'm looking right in my Haynes manual, page 1-33 thru 35 (you even made me go downstairs and get it).

step 30, "install the wheel bearing adjusting nut. While spinning the brake disc, tighten the nut to the spec torque (go to page 1-3 (FT-lbs unless otherwise noted)) = 35
step 31, loosen 1/4 turn
step 32 retighten to final torque (go to page 1-3 again = 16in-lbs

Oh, oh oh oh oh.... uh oh! better go re-do that.
:(

I'm sorry:bad:

It's 16 INCH/lbs after preload.

Either way, the nut that actually tightens the bearing is supposed to be 16in/lbs after you preload them, only difference is the manual hubs have a locknut that can be cranked down which doesn't change the bearing tightness, auto hubs have a little key that's inserted after you tighten the nut to prevent it from moving.

FYI: I am running 35s on a 10" rim with 4.75 in. BS. I cleaned the spindle, smeared it with RED thread locker, and torqued the OUTER nut to 250 ft. lbs.

Auto vs. manual is irrelevant with bearing preloads, you still have to tighten the nut to 35 ft-lbs to seat the bearings (then back off and retighten to 15 inch-lbs). Doing that with Channellocks may be possible, but it's gonna booger up the nut a bit.
