Last fall I had all of my brakes replaced (discs, pads, calipers in front and drums, shoes and spring kits in the rear). The truck has 156k on it and is a 2000, the old brakes needed replacing and I didn't want to have to fuss with it later on. Since I plan on keeping the truck a while I figured it was a good investment.

Well a few weeks ago I started getting a squeak in the front (I think). It's gotta be from the brakes, if I tap the brakes it immediately goes away. It normally comes back shortly thereafter. You can only hear it at low speed but it's a high pitch annoying screatch - sounds like a metal scraping sound.

I haven't taken the wheels off to have a look yet but any ideas before I do?

Take the wheels off and look.

-Check the bearings for play before removing the wheels.
-pad wear. Thin/ even?
-pad contact. Dirty/ missing shims?
-pad condition. Glazed/ cracked?
-caliper slides. Stiff/ seized?
-caliper. Seized/ leaking?
-hose. Collapsed/ plugged?

These are the normal ones I could think of as well, but I wouldn't think any of them would apply to parts that have only been on the truck for 6-8 months and less than 4,000 miles (I mostly drive the car to work to save on gas).

Other than that... Your on your own.

I've had rocks get between my pad and rotor while wheelin before. Just back up and it comes out. Very doubtful in your case.

Well, no squeaks this mornings so...not sure what's going on. When I rotate my tires I'll have to check it out.

I have also seen this happen if the hub surface is not cleaned properly before a new rotor is installed. Little pieces of debris and rust in between the hub and rotor faces can cause noises that go away when the brakes are applied. I generally clean the hub surface as well as possible (the studs do get in the way) with a whiz wheel or wire wheel and apply a light coat of nickle anti-seize.
