Kind of a silly question, I'm planning to perhaps crank up the engine in the '97 this weekend. With it sitting for so long, I figured it may need a little help. If it had a carb, I'd spray ether into it; is there a similar process for an EFI engine?

Depends how long its been sitting. Under a year crank it up. Longer maybe drain and put in fresh fuel.
I let my summer car sit for 4-5 months, just make sure the tank is full.
Make sure battery is charged.

It sat for 14 years :D I'm draining the fuel and changing out the fuel pump this weekend. Already changed the oil and flushed the coolant.

My credo
It was like that when I found it.
Wow 14 years! Could pull the fuel pump relay and crank it a bit to get some oil pressure and flow. I'm assuming it will crank and isn't stuck?

Yeah, that, maybe unplug the inertia switch at the front top of the passenger side carpet to crank and get oil pressure first but I don't think I'd be too worried...

14 years??
I would pull the plugs, squirt some oil in the cylinders and crank it for 30 seconds or a minute.
get the engine oil pumped thru it.
then install plugs and start. it will smoke.

Its probably better to be self deprecating than self defecating.
Holding the gas pedal to the carpet when you go to crank it will shut off the injectors and allow the oil to circulate/build pressure before firing.

So says the legend, my '97 doesn't do that but maybe the TPS isn't working right since it doesn't go all the way to 100%, stops at like 93%

A legend to the old man, a hero to the child...
My ranger sat for 12 when i got it.

Dumped fresh fuel in and cranked it up
