i put a 76 ford dana 44 high pinion 8 lug into my ranger. i received a low pinion drum brake hd dana 44 and would like to stuff the 5-86x axles shafts into my light duty 44. the only clearance issues i see is lower ball joint threads and fitting it in thru the knuckle. i was thinking grind the threads off the lower ball joint and put the knuckle on after the axle is installed or grind it to fit the ears thru.

has anyone else tried this already in person and not just researched it.

just swapped a crap neapco joint that i shattered first time out for a 5-760 dana spicer, and noticed the knuckle hole is plenty large enough to fit the ears thru. i left my 5-86 shafts at work. but once i get a measurement of the 5-760 vs the 5-86 i let you guys know. right now theres about a 1/4 in between the lower ball joint and u-joint. so if the 5-86 is only a 1/2 wider, than i should be able to shave the lower balljoint shaft and nut just enough i think it'll work.
