I have a 1994 Ranger XLT 4cyl manual. The most pallets I can haul to the pallet yard is 28 and that's really putting a strain on the suspension. I wanted to know what I could do to the rear suspension so that I could support the added weight. I could haul 50+ pallets to the pallet yard on the bed but I need to upgrade the suspension.

My mechanic told me I should get airbags and I would be all set. Anyone had any experience with airbags? Would adding leaf springs be better?

a small upgrade would be explorer leafs or make a custom set of leafs using your old ranger leafs and explorer leafs together. this is the cheaper side. airbags would definatly help though

swap to explorer leaf springs, and get air assist shocks. You can get a set of monroe air shocks (pn# MA770) with lines and fittings at pepboys for $70

For short term overloads I've used "air bags" and air shocks. I removed the bags years ago, but last year I put the shocks to carry a lathe home. I felt the 17 y/o suspension just needed a boost. I don't see a problem with using suspension aids from time to time, but not on a steady basis.
