Hello all,

I'm swapping my clutch slave cylinder, got the truck stripped down to just the bare tranny and transfer case but ran into a bit of confusion. The manual I'm reading isn't clear if you need to drain the transfer case and transmission if you're just changing the slave out of the bellhousing... Do I need to drain both of these systems before I unbolt them and drop them out of the truck? :dunno:

you don't have to, but you should or you'll end up with a big mess.

Oil is not that expensive. I would at least drain the tranny to keep from a possible mess. How old is the clutch now would be a good time to put a kit in clutch, pressure plate, TO bearing, slave, flywheel, pilot bushing and any leaking seals. make it new so you dont have issues in the near future murphys law says if you just change the slave you will be back.

Hey guys, thanks for the quick replies you saved me from a clean up!

I hear what you're saying about making everything in the system good but I need to put the truck back into service by the end of the holiday weekend. Plus I don't have my impact wrench setup yet and I wanted to change out my exhaust when I do the complete clutch system. ... and my freeze plugs are leaking...

I'll be doing all this again in about 3 months anyway. :dntknw:

Time to put in an order for a Luk!

I never drain either of them when I'm doing clutch related work. Don't put them on the side or upside down and they won't leak.

Same here. I just plug the holes that you know will leak if it does tip any which way.

I miss my other truck. It had an external slave... Didn't need to even touch a wrench to remove and replace the slave.

Thanks for the replies guys. I already drained the fluid from the transmission, glad I dd because it was smokey black and I got a chance to clean the metal fuzz off of the magnet. The transfer case is being a pain tho, doesn't want to come off. Gonna try another member's idea of working at it with some cold chisels...

Heh if it's hanging up on the upper passenger side, I bet I know what the alignment pin will look like when you finally get it off!
