well the ranger has 308k on the stock motor and frankly its getting tired. it doesnt use oil or anything but you can def tell the power isnt there.

i have a spare motor so im thinking about doing a mild build.

i want to build a motor that will work for towing and build low to mid range power.

thinking of doing .030 over pistons, 410 cam.

but from there im lost on what pistons to buy if i should bump the compression.

or even where to buy good parts for this motor.

some good advice would be great.

Northern Auto Part has good prices on good name brand rings and bearings.

I would really like to push the 200hp mark. Instead of the 160 stock

I have recently rebuilt my 4.0 from the ground up. Pulls great- running in 5th gear at 60 mph in the NC highlands of 3500-4500 ft elev up steep grade passing all kinds of new SUV's. 3.73 gears. Why do I tell you this because I have headers and still have very good low end power. Yes, the 410 cam. New enginequest heads- flow more. .040 pistons w/ moly rings. Don't bump up the compression-it is a headache. I'm from the days when you built chevys' with pop-up pistons with the vette heads and 12.5 to 1 compression ratio, but now pinging AIN'T NO fun to deal with. My build thread:

Talk to Tee Rev, he's well over 200hp with his. And go with a 422 cam for sure, 95tm heads on 90-94 pistons should give you around 10:1, and will run fine on 87oct and not ping.

I would suggest doing a 410 cam, si valves, headers, bbk tb, and calling it good. That will give you plenty of power close to the 190ish hp mark and more torque like you want. Porting the heads properly will help a lot but its expensive. Don't mess with compression as someone else mentioned. If you want a lot more power do the 422 cam and a supercharger. If you go that route, which I have, you will spend a lot of money for a little gain compared to what you could have by just installing a v8. However, I was able to greatly lower my costs by scouring the internet to find great deals on all of my parts which most people wouldn't do.
