My 22 ranger has started make some strange noises. Will briefly groan in a semi-hi pitch on initial take off when cold. And today it started making a dull whine when I shift into reverse but it passes And gives no problem. Sounds almost like letting the air out of a balloon slowly if that's any help. I just turnd 100k miles on it. I escort oversize load truck all over the country. Hence the high milage. Bought it new a year ago, changed trans filter @60K mi. Anybody else encounter this?

Hey Pilot, welcome to TRS! :)
I can't give you a lot of information on it but there are those who can, and will, in time. I can't say how much time but, well it's after midnight here now, sometime today! :)
Be careful out there, and good luck

I haven’t. Some have mentioned a delay in the transmission when it’s first put into drive after start up. But after that it’s fine.

Who did the fluid change on the transmission? I’m wondering is the wrong fluid was used.

If it was done by a dealer, I would have the dealer check it out.

I did the filter change. Motorcraft ulv fluid as called for but that was 40k miles ago. Just started the noise but only when I put it in reverse. It does a whining groan and then it's quiet. Sounds like you're slowly letting air out of a balloon only not so high pitched. No hesitation or slippage. Just noise for now.

I would have a shop look at it. It might just need a fluid and filter change but it could be a component failing.

ULV isn’t cheap, as you already know and could be a waste of quite a bit of money if it needs a repair or replacement.

Well my noise revealed itself today. Shift solenoid F went out on me today. The sad part is I was heading home from work to drop it at the shop to get checked out. It gave out abut 15 miles from home. Only left me with gears 1,2,3 but I was able to baby it to the shop. Very slow ride but didn't get any additional problems along the way. Nobody wants to work on trannys anymore. They only want to replace the transmission. I passed my ford dealer along the way but their transmission tech won't be back in the country until October. Fortunately I've got a transmission shop near me. Thanks for everyone's input. Now you know if you hear a whining like that you know where to look.
