I have a 1988 Ford Ranger xlt, ext cab with the 2.3 engine, 5spd mazda, 2wd. My tranny is stuck in 4th gear and wont come out at all. Could I replace it with a 4wd transmission as long as i leave the front driveshaft off and it work temporary. I cant find the 2wd anywhere however I can find the 4wd everywhere. PLEASE HELP IF YOU KNOW.

if you put a 4wd trans in there, you'll need the t/case to... then you'll need to customize your rear shaft to make it fit. i think....

the 4x4 trans is shorter... if you don't get the t/case you wouldn't have anywhere to put the front shaft anyways.

are you talking about getting a transmission and transfer case? or just the 4x4 trans?

Talking about trans and transfer case in it, just leaving the front unhooked and using the rear driveshaft from the 4x4 truck.

That will make the truck even better, you will have low range and if you decide later to throw a drive axle under the front, half the job will already be done. It has to be a four cylinder transmission you realise.

It will work as you have proposed. The rear 4x4 shaft is a must as the front end of the shafts are different.

So do you think I can go ahead and do it and not mess my truck up.

It can be done with the 4x4 trans, transfer case, and driveshaft from the donor truck and will work. If you are however actually looking for a 2wd trans that's a direct replacement just let me know and i'll PM you with a price.

as rboyer said, it will work with no risk of messing ANYTHING up, the mounting on the 2wd model might be slightly different, IIRC, the t/c mounts to a cross member, not just the back of the trans, but i forget...

could always drop your tranny and open it up to see what's up with it... probably cheaper than a new trans & t/c

I am looking for a 2wd mazda 5spd to replace mine but not having any luck. All im finding is 4wd trans. Local transmission guy said it sounds like a ball from the shift case is stuck in front ot the spring in the top of shift case and stopping it from moving to come out. I would love to take it out and have it fixed but Im not sure on how to get my master cyl clutch line off as for it has the internal slave cyl. Any advice, anyone with a 2wd trans they sale reasonable. Im unemployed and only have $200 to spend on a good used one. I love to trade tho. Whatcha need.

There is a tool that would come with a clutch kit. You use it to pop the little plastic collar on the fitting in and it releases the line.

I only have a handful of the suckers sitting around. If you PM me a mailing address I'd be happy to throw one in an envelope and send it your way.
