Long-neck transmisson funnel is one of my handiest tools.

Just remember that if you stuff a rag in it to prevent dripping, that you REMOVE the rag before pouring ATF into it...(ask me how I know...)

What does a funnel have to do with the dipstick?

To add fluid to the trans, you pour it into the dipstick tube.

Honestly, I've seen way worse locations for dipsticks. My Accord for example, has a dipstick that's about 6 inches long and you have to reach waaay down near the bottom of the trans to pull it out. It also requires a long funnel to fill. Or how about GM's 4T40E, which doesn't even have a dipstick. You need to jack up the car to get underneath it, while STILL making sure its level AND up to operating temp and remove a plug on the side of the trans. If it's not full, add fluid through another plug on top of the trans, (which is about 1/4" away from the exhaust pipe) until the fluid comes dribbling out the side plug.

BTW, not singling out GM's tranny. Many automakers, including Ford are starting to use similar dipstick-less transmissions.

At least it HAS a tranny dipstick. GM's for several years, and my '08 Sport Trac, do not have tranny dipsticks.

Understand that a lot of the new Mercedes don't even have a dip-stick. Took my old buddy 30 mins just to get down to where the battery was hidden on his daughters Montie. Todays engineers have to do the old trick of putting 10 lbs of crap in a 5 lb bag. At least you can see where to add the fluid!

The fact that it has a tranny dipstick IS the problem. A real man's transmission has no dipstick and a clutch instead of a torque converter. :icon_twisted:

Nah, just kidding. My wife and I actually just bought a new (to us) car for her today. It has an automatic transmission. It'll be our first vehicle with an automatic. Hopefully I can learn to like it.

My 99 and 2000 OHV trucks have the dipstick up against the firewall and they are not at all hard to get at.Guess newer isn't always better! :icon_thumby:
