by best friend has a 1999 for ranger xlt 4dr. crew cab 2wd truck. she has a 4.0 and wants to swap in a 1999 5.4 triton v-8,the reason being she's tired of her boyfriends 2006 f150 being faster than her ranger, good enough excuse for her. what will i have to do to make this swap for her? or has anyone done it yet? to bad shes not cute cause that would be the best girl for a gear head like me:icon_cheers:

just curious, but can she handle that much power in a truck that is light such as her ranger? I mean when my dad had an expy with the 5.4 that thing could move for its size. If i put that engine in my truck it would be sweet, but impossible to keep it straight....

It's not the power she'll have to handle, it's the weight up front. Same thing as putting in a 460, only the engine is even wider. Not really worth the hassle, you can get the same power in a smaller package with a stroked small block.

Since you're in California the first thing you'll want to do is to check if it would be a legal swap. No sense in going through all that work just to find out that it can't be driven on public roads.

Bye Bye Gas Mileage... Mine averaged 11, but that was pushing a Super Duty.

When my 460 block was at the machine shop, it was sitting right next to a 5.4 long block. It made my 460 block look small. They are humongous.

I don't think they are that much heavier than a SBF, while massive the heads are aluminum.

It would be a neat swap, the things have tons of power... but the electronics are pretty complex on them. Not to mention they are huge... a widget wider than a 460 but not quite as long.

I got 18mpg with mine on a fishing trip in July, and that was in a 5500lb + a bed full of gear F-150.

i saw a 4.6 in a ranger once, not sure how that compares to the 5.4 in external dimensions....but with all the mustang guys running the 4.6, aftermarket support for it is amazing. i work with a guy whos pushing around 450hp on a n/a 3v 4.6.

ight well you guys made some good points so i told her to scratch that idea. now i want to know would it be easier to swap in a 5.0 or would it be better to throw some pistons in the 4.0 and some 5.0 injectors and install a turbo system? then i don't have to dick around with electronics and i finally got to make a custom turbo system(for my dads plane but its tighter fit than any car) so i wont be lost. what do u think? O yea i tried to talk her in to selling the ranger and buying a 1/2 ton truck but i think shes afraid of driving a full size truck:idiot:

The SOHC 2v 4.6 is a tad over an inch narrower than the 2v 5.4.

But it's also taller too. I've got a friend that swapped one into a 1998-up Stang (don't recall the exact year) and he cannot fit the hood back on the car.
