I'm getting on with my M5R1 swap (only taken 6 months). I am having issues getting the fitting for the clutch line to hook into the slave cylinder. How much pressure/force is required to accomplish this? I know the line is for a '91 Exploder. I hope I hasn't dumb enough to get the '93 slave...I can't rember anymore. Is there a visual way to tell the 2 apart? Do I need to open the bleeder valve first? This last thought just didn't make sense for a quick connect fitting. Thanks for the help, MJ

Make for darn sure you didn't get a newer slave cylinder. They absolutely will not fit if the slave is the newer version.

If you have the right slave, it should go right in.

:annoyed: YEah, I am hoping I didn't. Will have to dig up the reciept and compare part numbers. I will probably try to get a '93 clutch line then. A lot less of a PITA then pulling the tranny. That is when I figure out the '93 won't mount to the master. :bawling:

^^ x2

The quick disconnects go together with almost no force.. I've done my 96 3 times, and a 93 once... They seemed pretty similair, but i never actually compared them when disconnecting/reconnecting.

Either way, should just slide right in, somethings from the wrong year in that setup.

Is the end available that will fit onto the '93 slave so I can just replace it instead of the whole line or slave? I know it's a stretch. I suppose I could go through the j/y and get one that way if all else fails.

Yeah, it's just a matter of finding one. I have to have this thing running next time home cause the tags go out this month and the city will get me for a "junk vehicle". Dealer will take 2 days AFTER I order and pay for it and I'm only home for 3. I hate time cruntches. This is why I'm a truck driver. :icon_rofl:

crap, so the 93+ slaves won't hook up with the older lines??!!

I've got a brand new 93+ slave in my garage waiting for a transmission to put it in.

Can you use the older slave with the 10" 4.0 clutch?

I need to start looking for a pre-93 slave or a 93+ master, I guess.

F**k.

Yes you can. The connectors between the line and slave is the only difference. The master *shouldn't* matter. My BII master went right to the '91 line. I was told on here that the '93's had the different connections, however part searches have lead me to belive that it is '92's because the line listings stop at '91. '93 makes sense since that was the year they changed the Ranger... BTW AutoZone is where I got my slave and master. I would suggest just simply looking for a '93 line if you don't have a line yet. I don't wanna pull the tranny again so that is the way I am going. Good luck, MJ

Ok, I compared pics from AutoZones site. From what I remember, my slave matches what they have for the '91, and doesn't match their '93. So, what now? Should I still try to find a used '93 line (cheaper in case of failure) and see if it clips in?

The only difference in the slave cylinders is the line fitting.

FWIW.....the '88-92 slaves had a black colored quick connect on the slave, and the '93+ were a yellowish color.

Their pics showed the black on the early and what appeared metal, I can agree with yellowish, on the newer. The other differences were the bleeder valve, earlier is larger something like a 10mm with plastic surround and later just the bleeder screw and line, similar to the brake system, and the bases, the early is a silver solid aluminum while the later was more of a black skeletal (basic) design. Just my take on it...

The later gold colored quick connectors are slightly larger than the older black ones. I read a post a while back on TRS where someone in this situation simply filed down the end of the gold quick disconnect to make it fit. I'm not recommending this method, but there it is for your consideration.

I would just get the newer gold line and be done with it.

Here is an update straight from the masters mouth.
Which clutch line to use with the M5OD-R1 depends on which slave cylinder you use.

The '85-87 slave from your early trans cannot be made to work.

The '88-92 "aluminum" slave uses the "black" coupler and the line used on all Ranger/Bronco2/Explorers up to the end of 1992.

in 1993 Ford switched to a glass reinforced plastic slave cylinder that
I believe is better than the earlier ones, but this requires a different
clutch line, one that uses a "gold" colored connector (they aren't compatible)

The "late" slave requires less fluid displacement and the '93-94 master cylinder is a smaller bore diameter (and uses a metal mounting "cup")

Using the '88-92 slave with the '93-94 slave cylinder is a receipe for
trouble and a clutch that cannot always be completely released.

making the combination the other way around results is a short stiff
clutch motion and once it works all the air out of the system pushing
the pedal firmly against the floor can actually break something
(either the master cylinder pushrod or the slave cylinder)

This is actually the combination that I run.
I don't like moving my foot that far to release the clutch.

as far as the T-case shifter? there are EIGHT distinctly different shifters used for the 13-50 T-case.

Only ONE of them will work with the mazda trans and it was not used on all '88-90 Rangers.... There are actually THREE shifters
used in this time period.

Lookatthat!

I didn't even have to be here or touch my keyboard!

BTW, you don't want to know how I discovered that particular little change...

Though I'm told by a friend that I created a priceless string of obscenities,
profanities and crudeities that he wished he had recorded...
