Clock spring!

I have not had Cruise Control since i bought this ranger last year. Finally got tore into it and everything checks out. Pressure switch ohms correct, Recall done, Fuse good so even though my horn works and the airbag light isn't on i am assuming a bad clock spring. Took out the clock spring and i THING when the former owner had the airbag deploy they might have also replaced the clockspring with the wrong one! There is 1 plug with 2 wires, (airbag right?) and the bigger plug only has 2 wires. Par # is F87B-14A664-BC Can't see how 2 wires would run Cruise Control?

Anyways i took apart a 97 Explorer in my backlot and that clockspring has 2 wires for the airbag and either 5 or 6 on the big plug. It's an Eddie Bauer but same buttons in the steering wheel. 5 or six wires makes more sense for cruise control. Any thoughts??

The first gens used 3 wires for horn and cruise. One wire was for 12v to the button assembly, one wire was for ground, and the third wire was "signal"....it carried different voltages depending on which button was pressed, and those signals went to the horn relay and the cruise module.

You could possibly do that with two wires, using the steering column itself as the third ground "wire".

I wouldn't assume a bad clock spring, because you haven't eliminated many other parts in the system. There's the wiring from the clock spring to the cruise module, the cruise module itself, the brake and clutch switches, the wiring from the module to the cruise servo, the servo itself, the linkage from the servo to the throttle, and possibly some vacuum lines and the dump valve at the brake, if it's a vacuum servo.

I recommend you find a service manual that shows all of this, or look it up on autozone (free registration required), and then proceed systematically. Test everything, starting at the buttons, and once you find something that doesn't behave as it should, you can determine WHY it doesn't behave.

Then fix it. It might be as simple as a loose connector or a rotten vacuum line.

Just ran across your post... Yes your right. It seams you have a spring for a truck "without power equipment" (cruise, remote key entry, etc.). You'll have to replace it with the correct spring to get the cruise working (provided something else isn't wrong).
