Hey all,

Running into some issues with my ranger transmission. Long story short, swapped the valve bodies to take care of flare shift, bolt head broke off with the refurb in (classic, feel like a moron), now no gears. I'm getting it towed to a local transmission shop I know nothing about (besides online reviews) because my normal place doesn't wanna touch it.

Over the phone, they told me they'd diagnose, and hopefully it's just a valve body swap to get back to normal(ish). They did say I might need a rebuild though, which could check out as there was what looked like half of a brass washer in the pan when I dropped it along with some tiny metal cylinders. Can post pictures later if anyone wants to bite on that. Fluid was definitely ripe and darker, but wouldn't say burnt.

Anyways, they quoted around 3k for a rebuild with a 1 year 12k mile warranty. Looking around online, I saw plenty of remanufactured options for what may come out as a few hundred more after install, with seemingly better warranties. 30k mile, 3 year, etc.

Anyone have any input or suggestions on this situation? Any experiences with remanufactured transmissions?

4WD 2006 4.0 SOHC, 229xxx miles if any of that matters.

Thanks, I appreciate all of ya.

I would suspect you need a full rebuild, so don't think they are trying to get you. It's very difficult to do surgery on a auto transmission and be successful.

They will already have it there, I would say let them rebuild it or put a reman in place. Unless you want to take it home and do it yourself with something you get online, which is not very much fun if you do not have a shop. Not much if even if you do have a shop.

Also, any rebuild that you find online is going to require installation by a licensed mechanic for warranty.

Another thing. If it survives 1 year/12,000 miles, you can be pretty sure there is nothing defective about it. It'll probably last as long as any other.

IDK about transmissions, but everything else "rebuilt" in a factory type setting tends to be of minimal quality. I suspect because the work is done by unskilled operators that are barely trained for the simplest task (Think supervisor says "Take that nut off. Change this. Put that nut back on"). Not to mention that they are being rushed the whole time.

My wife's 95 had a bunch of problems that seemed valve body related to me and rather than spend more of my time throwing parts at it I pulled it myself and had a local place go through it. My cost on that ended up being about $1900 and I had to pull it, reinstall it, and had some money into fluids and stuff. I think $3000 if they pull it & reinstall sounds pretty fair but be aware that if they find hard parts broken it may cost you a bit more.

My local place has a 12 month unlimited mile warranty. I went that route rather than a parts store reman (that had a better warranty) because I didn't want to have to fight with a chain store if their rebuilt unit fails. We have not put a ton of miles on it but so far it's been perfect, they did say it was mostly valve body problems, and whatever they did fixed 99% of my complaints.

It's getting harder and harder to find a local place that does carry in rebuilds. People are not very diligent during the removal and replacement, and ruin a perfectly good rebuilt transmission. It happens so much that they quit letting people bring them in, they do the whole job or they don't mess with it.

The cooler in the radiator is a sore point and the cause of many rebuild failures. It must be cleaned or the whole radiator replaced after a transmission failure.
