IMO Brand is a marketing ploy. Use whatever brand you want, they are made to specifications marked on the bottle. For viscosity check the manual. You do have a manual for your truck, don't you? One of the best investments you can make. The $20 manuals at the local parts place will do, or look for used factory manuals on eBay or ?

Ford recommends 75w140 now for all truck axles regardless of what the manual says. No idea why...

I actually don't know what brand I use. I pick up oil when its on sale don't care brand. I also grab oil from yard sales and off kijiji or Craigslist when the price is right.

Relax. We like to joke around here. We all new what you meant and if he didn't pick at your typo someone else would have.

Do you have a local junkyard that lets you pull parts yourself? We call them "u-pull" yards. Great resource for inexpensive parts. First, learn what year range to look for. The most compatible parts for your truck will come from '93 - '97 rangers and Mazda b-series pickups. Some things from other years will work also. You can also get parts from explorers and Mercury mountaineers. But parts from other vehicles can sometimes work, too. I have an electric dimming rearview mirror with compass in my '93 that came from a crown Vic or mustang or something. The cool thing about junk yarding is that you can figure out how to disassemble things there so you don't ruin your own vehicle learning at home.

There are lots of usefully articles in the "how to tech" section of this website. Read through those and you will become more familiar with your truck. The possibilities are endless.

Oh that was mild. One time someone typed it and said they had a 5.0 strapped to Manuel and I made some comment about reporting him for abusing immigrants.

Ford went to 75w140 a few years ago because it lubricates better and reduces friction in their attempt to get a gas mileage increase. It likely works because the synthetic gear oil is more expensive and Ford wouldn't spend money on anything that didn't make an improvement. I don't know how major a project you want to take on but you can make a noticeable difference with a gear ratio change. If you have 3.45's- a common 4 cylinder gear- swapping in a used rear with 3.73's or 4.10's will really help acceleration and you might be able to get Traction Lok in the bargain. All without engine mods. A suggestion: fresh spark plugs never hurt and it's better to replace the timing belt so you know how old it is, a 2.3 isn't an interference engine so it won't bend valves if the belt breaks but you'll still be stranded.
