My 03, 2.3 keeps setting the CEL as well as the check gas cap light. I have tried replacing the gas cap with no change.. I'm also getting what seems to be a random misfire but the only code I'm getting when I scan it is for the evap system.

I also have to pump gas SUPER slow or it will shoot back out the filler tube. I know from older vehicles that the vent hose was usually not venting to cause the gas to shoot back out.

My questions, #1- are the evap systems more complicated on these "newer" vehicles or is it as simple as the vent hose?

#2- While I believe what seems to be a random misfire is probably on the spark side even though it's not throwing any codes for that, is it possible that the pressure backup in the evap system could cause similar symptoms?

I know these may be stupid questions but that's one way of learning, right?

I suppose another way to learn is to keep trying to figure it out on my own.

I am having the same issue. The engine started running very rough like it was misfiring and there was a loss of power. I took the Ranger to Autozone to check codes, and was told the code was for a small evap leak. Autozone suggested I replace the gas cap, but the cap seal looked fine, no cracks in the rubber. So as of yet no solution.
