Hey guys I've been searching for the last week and found most of my information, but i still have a couple questions. I have a 99 4.0 4x4 and just got a full donor 96 5.0 for $500. I know i need a return fuel line, switch the in-tank pump. But what about the speedo?

First since the 99 has the rear axle speedo sensor and the 96 has the trans vss is it possible to swap the whole cluster and speedo cable? If not and i keep the o.g cluster and rear axle sensor will that mess with how the engine management work?

Im trying to cover all bases before i make the swap. Of anyone has done this swap and know how its done or knows of any other problems i my run into it will be great

I've done both, a 96 swap and an 02 swap. Your speedo circuit from your donor runs in the trans harness up go the ecu. It doesn't use the rear vss signal located in the axle...

You would be correct. I used a 99 for my donor on my 02, my 96 ranger was a 97 donor which was plug n play. From what I had to do on the speedo yours should be no problem. You should compare the wiring on plug C115 (the 42 pin square plug on top the intake mounted to the firewall) to make sure you don't get any crossed wires. Don't forget about plug C139 under the abs pump, you will have to do some wiring there. If you have any questions or hit a wall, I'd be glad to help out :icon_thumby:

Take a look at both my threads, they are very detailed and you only have to go thru the first post...

now wait a minute:icon_confused: if i use the advanced adapter to swap the transfer case isnt the vss located on it? and doesn't the ecm use the vss to run the tans properly. OR..... or (correct me if im wrong) is the rear vss on my ranger going to replace the vss on the transfer case?

Your 1999 Ranger gets the VSS signal from the rear end.

Your truck currently gets its vss from the rear axle. Your donor gets its vss from the Tcase. You will need to get a 97 or older Tcase with the vss. You may or may not have to rewire/repin for the speedo to work... I would definitely do some research on the speedo circuit and what connectors and pin locations that circuit travels on your 99. On the 96, pin 7 (grey/black is your vss on connector C115 (the 42 pin square plug located on top of the intake )...
