In your opinion What would be the best way to remove the inline pump and only have a pump in the tank. 88 ranger 2.9

Why not pull/buy a tank with pump from a later model ranger with a 2.9 engine and plug it in to your truck? Unless the line pressures are different.

Kinda what Tim said. Get tank/pump/lines/wiring from something 89 to 92.

Just want to get this clear before it happens, isn't the sending unit a different ohm range on the single pump models?

Meaning you'd need to separate the pump from the sending unit.

Why not leave the sending unit as is and just remove the pump and put a straight line in it's place, then use only an external pump.

I've done this swap, it's not hard I used a 94 pump when I did mine. I had already swapped in a 4.0 but it should be similar if you still have the 2.9. You will need to shorten the tube on the sender that goes from the pump and the opening in the plate that supports the pump. You will need to delete the frame mounted fuel reservoir and frame mounted pump, I used high pressure rubber fuel line to replace it. I also used regular low pressure fuel line for the return line as it carries little to no pressure.

Another option I have seen is to go get just the in-tank pump, not the whole sender assembly, just the pump, and install it on the intake sender. That will preserve the fuel gauge sender.
