Does anybody know if it's practical to swap the block & heads (only) from a 2001 3.0 L Edge to a 1996 3.0 L Splash reg cab and use everything from the 96 engine on the 01 engine (except the heads) to avoid any compatibility issues? In other words, does everything on the 96 engine bolt right on the 01 engine? My motivation for possibly doing this is the engine in the 96 Splash has no compression in cyl 5. I don't know why yet. When I yank it out I'll inspect it to see what's wrong. If it's something like a stuck valve I'll likely just fix it. If it's a camshaft or rod or some other expensive problem I probably won't.
I also have a 96 2WD Explorer donor with a V8 automatic (the 96 Splash is an automatic too) so a V8 swap is definitely a possibility. I also have a new Advance Adapters kit on the shelf and a spare stock EFI 5.0 engine (except for the fresh GT40 heads) that was in a 1990 Mustang I bought new. The car came to an unfortunate end but the engine/5 speed are A1. I have a heated 1800 sq ft shop, everything I need to do engine swaps and I'm retired now so the only issue I see with a V8 conversion is passing an etest here in Ontario. The emissions for the V8 engine have to meet the specs for the V6.
Just to make things even more interesting I also have 1993 Splash reg cab that's good enough to save it from the salvage yard too. It's a 5 speed. Both Splash's have AC/cruise etc.
Thanks guys
