2002 3.0 Rear Trouble!!

So I have a 7.5 3.73 in my 2002 3.0L. Some how the cross pin broke and ate at the pinion and will NOT come out past gear. It's stuck in the housing which it ruined also! I was curious what my options are?!

I was going to replace cross pin, close her up and trade the damn thing in for an F-150.

I found a salvage yard that says he has a 8.8 4.10 for $650 plus exchange.

Before I found out about housing 4wheelparts.com has a store near that said $700 out the door for 4.10 and internals (spiders and bearings).

The reason for 4.10 is about same price to install 3.73 and I have 31x10.5x15 tires. I know it's not 35's but some increase in pick up and go would be good!

The ONLY up side is I have a motorcycle and it's sunny here in Cali.
The bad news= I got orders to report to Lejune, NC by April 30th!

I'm looking for best long run and best short term options to weigh them out!

The crosspin isn't supposed to come out, because you have 3.73s and a 7.5, the ring gear is too thick to remove the crosspin, which is why it's notched. You can either A: grind the ring gear tooth down with a dremel just enough to remove it (common practice and it wont hurt anything), or B: push the pin out from the notched side, sliding the notched portion past the ring gear allowing you to push the shafts in to remove the c-clips and shafts, the pull the carrier, remove the ring gear and remove the crosspin. The easiest solution is to swap the whole rearend.

+1 on swap the whole rear end. its not cost effective to put money into a 7.5 when an entire junkyard axle can be had for less money.

Do the swap, I did the same exact thing with my 3.0 and 31s in september when I broke 2 teeth off the pinion, the swap is more cost effective anyway, and I bet you can talk the guy down a few bucks as well

$650 plus yours seems a little bit high to me. All areas are different I guess. I just picked up the whole rear 8.8 axle w/ 4.10 gears, less than 19K miles on it for $375 last fall. Try www.car-part.com for the best deal. A lot of the yards will arrange shipment.

I used that site to find salvage yard.
If I put the correct information in then it says there is one for $500 about an hour away.
With all of these options I was wondering which is best pick?!
Is there anything I should know - tips to look out for while doing it?
It should be an easy swap correct?

One other question

I was wondering what kind of performance should I expect?
Those who have done it- did you notice a big increase in rate of acceleration or "peeling out" when taking off, etc?
Back in high school (about 15 years ago) I had a friend with a mustang who could go like 50 in 2nd gear or something like that.
I think he said it was from changing the ratio.
Is this right?
Is that something similar to expect?
From what I get the 8.8 means it will be stronger and I'll be able to tow more or haul more in the bed.?.
Sorry for all these off the wall questions, but this is one area I've NEVER dealt with on any vehicle yet.

The 7.5 is a dog. I have a 2005 3.0 and had to put two rearends in it before 50K. I need another one. I found an 8.8 97 xploder with sway bar and disk brakes for $225. The cheapest I'v found them down here is $150 to $425. I'll be putting it in either today or tomorrow. The ratio is 3.73. I think if you look around, you might be able to find one cheaper.

If your running 31's, I'd go for the 4.10. Make sure the yard just doesn't torch the brake cables instead of disconnecting them up (no big deal) front at the "Y" yoke. Lot of yards up here toss the brake drums which is no big deal, nice to start out fresh parts.

If you're running 31s on a 3.0L, I'd be grabbing that one. Otherwise 4.10 should be OK too.

i agree with Junkie 4.10's are good, but 4.56's ARE BETTER

So here is after math

So Long story short: junk yard sold axle I planned on using and I waited as long as I could. Finally had 4 wheel parts do repairs and here is the results. It cost a lot ( I think) but everything is pretty much new. It seems odd, but it looks like they spray painted the case only. Is this usually what happens? They didn't mention it, but I've read where people get gear oil changed after first 500 miles. Any one wanna add their .02?

i think it looks good painted black. im swapping my fluid out this weekend. a little over 500 miles, i hear its a good practice. did you go with 4.10's?

edit: i guess you did. its stamped right on the cover...
