I am experiencing a brake problem. when i am aplying brakes ,, llike at a stop or slowing to turn, the brakes start like locking and then release. Making a klunking, grinding sound.Kind of like the abs is pulsing. The truck slides and doesn't stop properly. My wife has gone through stop signs. Very scary thought. After doing some research, seems like its the sensors. Have got from cleaning to replacing. Any thoughts??!! And can I replace if needed?

Thanks, Don

I get the same problem on mine. I think it has to due with crappy wet weather, and gets a little surface rust on the rotors and drums. But I could be totaly wrong

The tone rings on that year truck are a little thin, they are the ring that the abs sensor "sees." This little ring gets rust under it and bulges out and breaks. You can change them out, and change out the abs sensor. Problem is though, if the truck has enough rust where the ring popped, you probably won't be able to remove the sensor in one piece to clean it. Best bet, especially with your wife driving it, is to hook it up to a scanner with the ford-specific programming where it can see actual sensor values, and drive around. One of your front sensors is is going to be all over the place or not reading at all until 5-10 mph, change out the entire hub/bearing assembly on that side. My buddy just went through this. Until you fix it, pull the ABS fuse so that the truck will stop properly, but remember, with that fuse out - she's gonna be tail happy under braking.

Had the same problem on my 02. Wehn coming to a stop after the speed was below 10 mph the brake pedal would drop adn the ABS would kick in. Had the garage look at it. The ABS wasn't getting any signal below a certain speed. Had both hubs replaced. I heard you can replace the sensor for a lot less money but it's a pain. Also the hub is a complete unit. The ring the sensor. See below.

Start by cleaning out the sensors and go from there. Had an early 90s fwd GM where the ABS would cycle and turn the ABS light on. Cleaned out the plugs/sensors and problem solved

abs does weird things... my truck, when i floor the brake pedal when i'm doing hiway speed (for instance someone pulls out in front of me, or an accident around a corner and i need to stop NOW) it will brake, then when i hit about half speed, there's kinda a clunk, and the brakes REALLY grab, sometimes it will do it a second time...
