Ah. Not so much a prototype as Ford just rearranged their marketing a year after the FX4 was introduced.
Yup, they wanted to free it up to offer the plain FX4 to basically be the same as the former "Off-Road".

Yup, and those didn't have the 31 spline axles or the Torsen diff or the Alcoa 15" Rims, etc.

This Ranger has never been off-roaded and was purchased brand new by my brother in 2002 who passed away last year, so it's a single owner car until ownership was transferred to me.
If interested please send a message and I can give more details.

It looks to be in great shape and is definitely a 02 FX4.

My credo
Grew up in the 70s, 80s, and 90s
man, stock with 31 inch tires. i thought putting 30s on my ranger were going to be big.

31s is bigger than wranglers came with for that year. my 03 wrangler says 215/75/15 on the tag

And it runs excellent. No leaks, no burning oil, tight steering and suspension. It drives like it just rolled off the lot.

Yeah, Ford had the right idea when they built the 2002 FX4. Especially with the 31 spline axles and Torsen 8.8" diff. It was over-built for sure.
