According to the tech section of this website my 2005 Ranger 3.0 (definitely a 3.0 V-6) has a 5R44E transmission. Transmission code D. The inside door panel shows a TRN code of D so I assumed tech section was correct. I bought this truck when it was a little over a year old with 20k miles on it so I'm sure it's the original transmission. The tech section shows the transmission pan having 16 bolts. I ordered a transmission pan gasket and transmission filter for a 2005 Ford Ranger 3.0 4x2 and received a pan gasket that has 18 bolt holes. ?? I accused the sender of sending me the wrong gasket and who knows if the transmission filter is the right one since the gasket was wrong according to tech. I climbed up underneath the truck and counted the bolts in the transmission pan and yes indeed it does have 18 bolts. Open mouth and insert foot. What's up with this?? Is tech wrong? The MFR date on this truck is 12/04 but it's titled as a 2005 and 2005 parts have always worked.

Looks like you have a 4r44e transmission.

Car-part also says you should have a 5r44e Here are the available transmissions in 2005

Thanks Franklin. I appreciate your response but according to your post of available transmission in a 2005 Ranger 3.0 4x2 automatic transmission I have a 5R55E transmission. With an 18 bolt transmission pan that is incorrect according to TheRangerstation.com. And if I read it correctly in Rangertech.com the bellhousing would not line up if the transmission was replaced at 20k miles with a different transmission. There is some confusion here. Something is screwed up.

Not screwed up just Ford reusing the 4R housings it still had, so get the 18 bolt gasket, filter will be the same

4R and 5R are the same transmissions internally, both are 4-speeds
The "5th gear(ratio)" was added using computer software in 1997 4.0l Rangers, and it worked great, so in 2001 it was added to the 4cyl and 3.0l Ranger Computers
You can pick pretty much any internal part and it will say "fits 1995-2011" 4R or 5R
4R means 4 forward Ratios(speeds)
5R means 5 ratios(speeds)

But the 2001-2011 5Rs did get 2 added external sensors, the ISS and the OSS sensors
And your 2005 computer would need those or it would throw at least 2 trouble code
So no one swapped in a 1995-2000 3.0l 4R(well.......Ford did, lol)

44E was used on 4cyl and 3.0l V6 Rangers, its a torque rating, 440ft/lb
55E was used only with 4.0l V6 and did have a bigger OD drum, 550ft/lb
"E" is for electric shift

The 1995 thru 2008 3.0l used the same bell housing in the 4R or 5R, so either will bolt to a 3.0l Vulcan engine

Tech guide isn't wrong, you should have a 5R44E with 16 bolt housing, but you don't, so that is something Ford did...........at the factory
Have read about this before, but not common
And you DO HAVE a 5R44E transmission because you do have a 2005 Computer and that is what makes a 4R a 5R

If this is the only difference you run into I would be surprised :)

Thanks Ron. That was very informative. I'm a little surprised the gasket supplier sent me the correct/incorrect 18 hole pan gasket using only the year, model and engine size. This would have really had us scratching our heads if not for your post.
