4.0 In an 88

I know I know I know, there was a thread just recently about a swap into an 89, tried the search, typed in '88 bronco 2 4.0 swap' and got: "The search term you specified (2) is under the minimum word length (2) and therefore will not be found. Please make this term longer"

...I thought my search was long enough..... Anywho, you guys say that 89 and 90 are just about plug and play, but what about 88? Is there somthing different with that year that they change in the next?

I have an 88 2.9 5spd. The 2.9 is tired and hurtin', and I want to do the 4.0 swap after I move into the house I'm workin on renting with a buddy. I'll actually have room to work on it and not let it sit at my parents house in NH.

I'm just trying to get all my info together that way when it does come time to pull the 2.9 hopefully at the end of June, early July, while sorta gathering parts in May, I'm not bouncing back and forth for what to do or trying to find info because this isn't going where it's supposed to or that isn't working, I can just hopefully get it all done in a weekend with a few friends and have a good build thread.

Rangers have gone through several renovations over the years

'89 is the first year after some fairly extensive revisions and
4.0 was introduced the following year.

The '88 is the earlier style and is essentially wired as differently
as if you were comparing a ford and a chevy (slight eaggeration)

Swapping a 4.0 into an '86-88 is considerable more complicated
than the same swap into an '89, because an '89 with a 2.9 is
so similar to a 90-92.

an '88 is not.

So yeah, it's more complicated, but not impossible, just more difficult.

One thing that helps you is that you have the "Y" pipe rather than
the "H" pipe used on the '86-87 2.9's, the differences is that the
'88-up "Y-pipe" is less prone to rusting at the gasket surface and leaking.

I have a 4.0 in my 1987.
