I am preparing to swap the 4.0 out of my 94 2wd into my 93 4x4. The 93 currently has a 3.0. Both trucks have A4LD transmissions.
My understanding is that the 4.0 bellhousing can be used on the 3.0, 4x4 transmission.
Are there any internal transmission differences between the 4.0 2wd (truck was equipped with tow package) and the 3.0 4x4? (i.e.: clutch packs etc.)
In other words would I be ok to swap the 4.0 bellhousing on to the 3.0 transmission or would I be better off to tear both transmissions down to swap tail shafts so the 4.0 transmission will mate to the transfer case?

I would look in the transmission section but as far as I am aware they are the same transmission with different bell housings and tailshafts and thats about it.

My intuition tells me they are the same but I have seen a couple of posts that say there is a difference.
One example: http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=110064
None of the posts were specific, leaving me with some doubt that there is a difference.
I have not found anything about this topic in the tech library either which is why I was hoping to find someone who new specifically.

Yeah that seems to be the problem, i can find all the info in the world on here that supports me or not and then theres the one thread that makes me wonder... GAHHHH!

But I think they are the same I see no reason it wouldn't be the same. gearing and sensors may change with the year and motor it came with but other then that it should hook to the same computer and everything. Though I am not the most reliable source as i ahvevery little knowledge with the autos.

If I leave the 3.0 trans in and it breaks, at least I have the 4.0 trans for parts.
