I have a 99 4x4 ranger with a 4R44E. I don't know a bunch about the truck, my Dad gave it to my son for xmas. Runs good, trans fluid is cherry red, really clean but the tranny is sloppy. 2nd and 3rd don't feel like they fully engage 1st, OD, and reverse feel fine. Would the updated valve body fix this? I have read a ton of posts on here but everyone seems to have a slightly different problem than mine...wondering if the valve body would striaghten it out. I see some valve bodies on flea bay with new selenoids, shift kit, etc. what do you think?

I like to read the auto trans tech over on Explorer Forums, Serious Explorations. They have a LOT of detailed info to answer your questions. Search over there. Don't get me wrong, I love this place, but they cover it so well over there.

In general, any Ford auto will appreciate band adjustments, new valve bodies, Trans-go shift kits, new solenoids, etc. I haven't had occasion to do any of that, but I read it.

It's all in your wallet, so to speak.

if 2nd and 3rd are the only problem gears, try changing the 2-3 shift solenoid, it may be your only problem, and save you time and some cash over the full kit.
