I was talking to a guy and his buddy had a 96 4.0l 4x4 automatic for sale- $500 (questioning why?) In any event, there are about 3 things I would want from a parts truck. Motor (SOHC only, not another OHV), manual tcase (this one has S*** on the fly, so that's out), and/or axles with 4.10 gears (for obvious reasons).
Guy gave the axle code off the door tag, R6, which as referenced to TRS tech library and google, is a L/S 3.73. I asked if one can remove the l/s components and put a locker in (namely, the LR 1820 I have in my truck). Consensus is that it can be done if the carrier is switched out to a standard open carrier.
That's way too much effort to put 3.73's in, when I want 4.10's anyway. Although if I had actually needed an axle, I would have jumped on the deal and scrapped the truck (less any other parts salvaged).
