Can I gut a 8" with 3.73's and a posi to put in a landockrite 1820? I might have a good deal on them and it beats 3.27's. Won't do it if I cant put my locker in

8" as in the old school mustang rear end with removable third member?

Or do you mean ford 8.8 out of a ranger/explorer? And if so, what spline count on the carrier?

Either way, if it has a L/S, your answer is NO.

Damn, I wasn't sure if the clutch packs fit into the carrier or not like an open... And it's out of a 96 or else I'd take the single cam. Not going to bother putting an ohv back in...

I'd assume you can snag the pinion and ring gear but not worth the effort for 3.73's when I want to put 4.10 in eventually.

Ah. I could swap the carriers out if it was worth it. But not for 3.73. Good to know though. Especially to get a 4.10 posi, lock the rear and keep a posi in the front.

I am very confused by this post.

I was talking to a guy and his buddy had a 96 4.0l 4x4 automatic for sale- $500 (questioning why?) In any event, there are about 3 things I would want from a parts truck. Motor (SOHC only, not another OHV), manual tcase (this one has S*** on the fly, so that's out), and/or axles with 4.10 gears (for obvious reasons).

Guy gave the axle code off the door tag, R6, which as referenced to TRS tech library and google, is a L/S 3.73. I asked if one can remove the l/s components and put a locker in (namely, the LR 1820 I have in my truck). Consensus is that it can be done if the carrier is switched out to a standard open carrier.

That's way too much effort to put 3.73's in, when I want 4.10's anyway. Although if I had actually needed an axle, I would have jumped on the deal and scrapped the truck (less any other parts salvaged).

I understood the whole axle thing. It was the OHV vs OHC part that was confusing me.

Ah. Just wanted to make sure we were on the same page. I had talked to the guy earlier today and he said the motor "runs great" but had a bum tensioner and the tensioner pulley bearing is siezed. Also he noted it is out of coolant (not sure whether or not he opened the radiator or just the overflow). Otherwise the interior and exterior are supposedly in great shape, and the 4x4 system has never been used (DD, suburbs). I've never seen the truck, or spoken to the owner, but just hearing that it makes me sad to see someone would neglect a beautiful truck. I've already spoken my grievances as to the not worth my effort situation, though.
