It's as easy as loosening the distributor bolt and turning it, while you've got your light on, right?

Well, according to the sticker on the vehicle, and my manual, there is a connector I'm supposed to disconnect, to disable electronic distributor advance/retard, while setting base timing at idle.

I CAN'T FIND THE CONNECTOR?

It says there is a one wire black connector near the distributor, but I see no such thing.

Any pictures to show me what I'm looking for?

I have no pix,but...what you are looking for is the SPOUT connector,or "pill" as it is sometimes called. It is a little "jumper" or "shunt" plug that you remove prior to setting base timing. MANY times is is located near the distributor.
Some early Rangers have it on the passenger side of the engine bay, near the Diagnostic connector.
It sorta/kinda looks like a small rectangular black box appx 1/4"x1/2",that plugs into a little receptacle, with one wire in,and one wire out.
Look at the pass side near the firewall and heater box.

Nothing from my Images search yielded anything that looks like what's under my hood.

I still can't find it!!!

You should take pics of the harness leading to the distributor and post em up. If you really need me to, I can take pics of the one on my tbird. It is a 2.3 after all...

The SMOG guy found it, during my inspection...

Nothing like the pictures. Timing was at 2 degrees BTDC....it failed with high NO (ppm)

Now knowing where the Spout connector is, I readjusted timing to 11 degrees BTDC and it passed!!!!

Now I can complete transfer of title and drive!!!
