I went and checked and sure enough 20 pages after "remove retaining plate" there is a picture showing how to do it. It would have been easier to notice flipping thru a real paper book rather than an online one.

Yes when doing something unfamiliar I greatly prefer the paper book as they usually have the pictures closer to the relevant instruction.

DO NOT USE THE SLAVE CYLINDER MOUNTING HOLES TO PUSH OFF THE FRONT BEARING RETAINER PLATE!

Info on the R2 is harder to come by than the R1, it is supposed to be a scaled up R1 but apparently not everything is the same but bigger.

The holes are not thru holes on an R2 so this method does not work.



What looks like a crack below the top left hole is really a crack. On the fence about it, it won't cause a leak. More concerned about getting it torqued right and it not throwing off the input shaft bearing.



Trans is gutted, countershaft is just sitting in there.



Clutch stuff came in, flywheel, clutch kit, slave and master cylinders.

Yeah, that occurred to me later after I saw that the slave cyl holes didn’t work so well.

Yeah, now that I see that picture of the plate, it's not actually the slave holes, it's the slave bolts, in the other holes.

I know it works on the R2 because I have done it.

I think Ford enjoys doing that kind of thing.

Note that their R1 graphic shows the ears on it too. Unless you probe the holes for depth (or have the right book) there is no way to know. Might be safer to just use the ears if you have them. I was doing mine on the floor in my cave of a basement so they were not so obvious.

Not the end of the world, I found one out of a '94 on ebay for 25 bucks. Should interchange with my '04 transmission.

Upon further inspection I declare that front retainer plate is hosed.



I also kinda stuck everything back together somewhat to make reassembly easier (maybe) once all my parts show up now that I know for sure which 3-4 syncro assembly I have.





Also waiting for a shop manual on CD for the thing. I have found enough differences already between an R1 and an R2, I don't want to mess up more than I already have.

Kinda went through the same thing recently with my TK5. I found a shop willing to work with me and save me from myself. I learned a ton and have as close to a brand new transmission as I can. Man, there's a ton of small parts in those things. And, good news...Spring is on its way!

I am having fun with it but I need instructions. Mainly for the torque of the two nuts on the back of the shafts and what all is entailed in changing the input shaft and bearing.

I am not figuring on rebuilding the whole thing, just changing the input shaft and the 3-4th sycro assembly and now that I have to replace the front bearing cover I might as well do the input shaft bearing too since it looks like a PITA to dig the bearing race out of the cover. Everything else looks really good syncros included.

My brother is a Sr Master Ford tech so if I get in over my head I have the "phone a friend" lifeline.

It is adding up though, wondering how much gas I am going to have to save to justify this.

I can't wait for spring, it is supposed to be in the 50's today. Only halfway thru winter though.

Still waiting on parts to finish up the trans... I did find a neat score at a used bookstore though.



The graphic on the cover is really cool. They took some liberties on the tires and wheels, I don't think wagon wheels were ever an option and those kind of look like humvee tires...



Not sure why but when the older ones pop up for cheap I snag them. They seem to have more info in them than the newer ones... although they don't cover my truck all that much anymore. I am 2 for 2 on Haynes vs Chiltons now.



The old beat up faded Hanyes is the one I got like two weeks after I got my truck when the fuel pump went out.
