You will need the engine and trans, engine wiring harness and computer. Check your gear ratio, you probably have 3.73 or 4.10 already. With the torque of the 4.0 any gear ratio will be fine with stockish tire size. Unless your axles are toast I would probably leave them alone until one breaks, which might be never.
I do mainly highway driving and like the 3.27 I have. Off road they aren't great but its a work truck that spends 99% of time on road.
There is a great tech section at the top of every page that will have the answer to most of your questions. Check it out.
Start a build thread with lots of pics. Its a great thing to have when 2 years down the road you can't quite remember what you did.

Welcome to TRS :)

Yes, when swapping engine sizes in a Ranger there is no benefit in using another "Ranger" engine size, in fact it has a down side in the reduced value of vehicle, because which would you rather buy a factory 4.0l Ranger or a 2.3l Ranger converted to 4.0l?

Same parts are needed when swapping in a V8 into a Ranger and there were no Factory V8 Rangers, well production V8 Rangers, lol.

But yes, you need the engine and transmission set, in 2WD or 4x4 to match what you have, then the engine computer, engine wiring harness and some of the engine bay wiring depending on the year of the donor vehicle

Its often less expensive to fix current Ranger and then sell it, then buy a Ranger with the larger engine you want
