93 Ranger 4.0 intake ideas

Hey yall-

I'm looking for ideas on upgrading my stock air intake to handle the type of wheeling I do(mud and water crossings). I am having trouble with soaking my air filter, and I think it's because the stock intake draws air from so low on the radiator support. Any ideas? It's my daily driver, and spends 60-70% on road, so I don't think a snorkel is necessary. But I need some solution, as I have come dangerously close to hydrolocking.

Also, are the later 4.0 intakes a better design, or more efficient? I've noticed they use a cone filter vs. a panel filter, and I like the way it sits in the engine bay vs my stock intake.

The 4.0 always used a panel filter.

If you don't want to do a full on snorkel, how much do you use your glove box?

A lot of hard-core mud guys who don't want a snorkel put the air filter in the glove box.

That's a cool idea, but the glovebox is where I keep my glock. I have seen some people go into the cowl area. I might just remove the hot/cold pipes from the box and run it open.

Running it open doesn't get it much higher and it does remove a U-bend in the pipe.

You could fab up a scoop, turn your air box upside down and put the scoop facing backwards on the hood.

That's true, although I'm never really fording through more than about 2 feet of water. I think my real issue is more splashing than being too deep.

I would rather run a snorkel than a scoop(just personal style opinion) I'm just not sure if I need that drastic of a solution.

I thought about trying to use the opening behind the passenger headlight to just "raise up" the fresh air port. But it's not that much higher.
