I've just replaced the rack & pinion and power steering pump on my '99 Ford Ranger (4.0L OHV V6 with 4WD) and they came with hard, white O-rings and soft black O-rings.

The stock lines appeared to have the hard, white O-rings about halfway up the threads and no sign of the soft black O-rings used at all. I have replaced a power steering pump and rack & pinion before, but they never used the hard, white O-rings.

What is the proper way to install these hard, white O-rings? They don't seem to be large enough to fit over the power steering hose fittings and I don't want to damage them and end up having to buy new power steering hoses just to get new O-rings.

Thanks!

You heat the teflon o-ring in hot water and pop it on.

Thanks Doofy, that makes sense. . .but where do the O-rings go at on the fittings; there is no O-ring groove on these fittings as you would normally see.

As I said in the first post the "original O-rings" (to my knowledge) were about halfway up the threaded portion of the male fitting on the hoses. . .that is the first and only time I have seen an O-ring used like that.

Two of the three pressure side fittings are flat (no cone/flare to seal against) and the third fitting is a tapered on the R&P but no corresponding taper/flare/cone on the hose.

Thanks again.
