When I rebuild an auto transmission I use the ATSG manual.. Napa may have them as well. It's a must if you're going to do it yourself.

The parts should run < $250. I'll go to NAPA or a local transmission parts house to buy the parts. In your local area go to a couple of mom and pop transmission places an ask where they buy their parts.. then go there.

If your going to do the job, you might as well pop for a rebuilt torque converter as well as new bands.

Tools can be a concern. I'd pick up a 1/4" inch-pound and 3/8" torque wrench. I like the clickly type but most use a beam wrench.

Just go slow, make sure you understand the manual and keep things clean and you'll do fine.

Is it showing any signs of breaking/slipping? Rebuilding a trans isn't exactly a maintenance item. It could go another 100k for all you know. I would leave it until it actually does break.
