Hi all, it's time for another battery. My '85 BII calls for 590CCA. I have always bought one around 700+. Am I doing more harm than good? I do not have a winch, but I do have a stereo I connect straight to the battery to run with the truck off. Nothing fancy, Punch150 amp, 1 12" woofer.

Are Optimas worth the extra expense? What do you folks prefer, size/type?

I personally don't think Optimas are worth the extra. Plus they never seem to fit right, especially on newer vehicles with less slack in the cables. I usually get the factory spec'd Motorcraft or Diehard. Both brands have served me very well over the years.

Anyway, you aren't hurting anything by having a higher amp battery in there. Most loads will only draw what they want.

The only reason to really consider amps on a stock vehicle is if it sits a lot. A lower amp battery won't die as fast sitting.

I have an Interstate, that works good for me. The boss also sells those and we have good luck with them at our shop. I'd say either that or a Motorcraft battery.

I have a DieHard Platinum installed in the Ranger. Best dang battery that I ever spent $200 on. It is still going strong after 5years and still cranks easy in the cold winters.
