Hi everyone, Merry christmas.

I bought an '02 ranger about a month ago. it's 4x4, 4.0, and i think 5R55E trans. mileage is about 163,xxx. I've put about 800 miles on it, and for about the first 700 miles it was fine.

Recently, it stopped being able to be put in park. it's almost like the gear shift lever can't reach the park position. The first time this happened I stopped and put put it in park, then went and did some stuff. When i came back a bit later the truck wouldn't start at all. i was scared sh*tless for a little while then found that if i put it in neutral it would start. So since then I've just been putting it in neutral instead of park and using the Pbrake.

Is this a serious problem? Could someone with very low repair skills fix this or should I have a mechanic do it?

if I need to explain anything further tell me. thanks.

Sounds like it might be the brake switch located on the brake lever. I had the same problem on my 02 2 wheel drive auto.

is it locking into park and holding the wheels from moving? is the shifter sloppy?

you're either out of adjustment, worn bushings, something came loose

or you have something stuck in the linkage.. i've found gravel stuck in a linkage once that stopped it from reaching park
