I failed PA emissions testing due to code P0455 which is a large leak in the fuel evaporative system. Suspected a loose gas cap, but when my mechanic checked he found that the fuel fill tube assembly was rusted out and had to be replaced(according to the mech Rangers have this tube exposed to wheelwell?). The part alone is $275 and I was wondering is anyone had a better idea on how to fix (other than replacement). I doubt that there would be an aftermarket part for sale but if someone has a resource that I could check it would appreciated. Thanks

no fix for that other than replacing it. i know it sucks but it's whats gotta be done. you could ask your shop if they are able to issue a waiver sticker. the requirements for a waiver is to fail the emissions test twice and spend $150 towards repairing the emissions problem. diagnostic time and parts can be included. where are you located in PA? send me a pm and maybe we can schedule you at my shop.

If that filler assembly has visible holes, the interior portion may be OK.

I would remove it (3 bolts at the filler door and two hose clamps) and see just how bad it is. Clean the rust off and JB Weld might seal it. There are also 2 part epoxy type fuel tank sealants available, that may also work.

A junkyard may have one in better shape than yours.

I am assuming yours is the same as mine, it has an elbow sticking out of the large tube with a small hose clamped to it.

You should be able to see it from underneath.

Thanks for everyone that responded. I actually just bit the bullet and paid to have the assembly replaced. It fixed the CEL and I am roadworthy again (acccording to PA). Total cost of state inspection was $750 (needed new muffler also).

I am actually located in the Pittsburgh area in response to Bikerboy's question.

Now, if I can just get the ABS light to go out.........PittPaul

I actually might be able to help on that ABS light.

I have a 1999 Ranger. My ABS light was on for quite a while and then I began to have problems with my speedometer. It would only work after I was going more than 20 mph . . . then 30, and eventually only worked after 50.

After a little research I replaced the Speed Sensor on the rear differential ( which is also associated with the ABS sensor ) and it fixed my speedo problems AND my ABS light. The part was only about $16 at Autozone and it took me 10 minutes to replace ( there is only one bolt ). Here are some images to help you out.
