Hey all,
I'm having problems diagnosing a clunking sound from my 99 Mazda B2500. First off, specs are 99 Mazda B2500, two wheel drive, five speed. The driveshaft is a one piece driveshaft, with a slip yoke on the end that inserts into the rear of the transmission.
The clunking sound sometimes occurs during acceleration, but it is most noticeable if I'm coasting up to a light in neutral, then I can really hear it. I can also feel it through the steering wheel at times.
I have replaced the driveshaft ujoints, which seemed to help some, but not entirely, and I have also replaced the rear differential fluid (the fluid in it seemed to be in decent shape, wasn't really too dark). I have also replaced the transmission fluid recently.
Another detail worth noting is that this problem seems to only occur when it's warm/hot outside..if I drive it early in the morning when it's 50 degrees or below, it doesn't really occur, but if it's warmer (such as 75-80+) it is definitely noticeable.
I'm not sure what else to check..does this sound like a drivetrain problem, or maybe a hub/bearing problem? Is it a rear end problem? I've tried twisting the driveshaft to check for any play in the rear end, and it doesn't really have any play whatsoever. Do the splines from the slip yoke on the driveshaft needed to be heavily greased to avoid any sort of binding? I'm not sure where to turn without taking it to a shop.
Thank you in advance!
