Considering Rough Country Springs and Shocks

I had a closer look at it - with my glasses on and a magnifying set on and it looks like it's just the top couple of threads where I whacked it with the hammer. I'm thinking if I carefully grind off the end down to where the threads are good, I'll be able to salvage it. Should only be about 1/8 of an inch.

That will workjust back it out carefully, and when screwing in the new one give it a good push, it will bite fine...a little loctite won't hurt...

Maybe try to hit it with a wire wheel first. Also I've had luck cleaning up threads with a corner file.

Got it done last night. Wire wheeled it to death, hit with a grinder to level it out. Corner filed the first few threads to clean it up and viola. Film at eleven.

I have a Snap On rethreading kit... the thread files in the set are indispensable. Here is a thread file set on Amazon... every DIY'ers tool box should have these. They have saved countless things in my jouneys.

So you found one of the coil springs broken...good job finding and replacing that!!

I am compleled to recommend James Duff Enterprise 70/30 shocks for the front, 2 per side if your budget can afford them. It may be the best suspension money you'll ever spend.

I moved to dual 70/30's in the 87 Ranger front only, approximately 1994-95 and finally added them to the 87 BII, all four corners in 2006-07. Haven't had to replace one yet; the shock boots haven't lasted that long but they are a small expense.

For ride quality and manners, I prefer the Skyjacker "Easy Ryder" coils.

That package coming your way has new urethane spring isolators in the box. I'm surprised your old ones look that good.

Well....it looks like I damaged the threads on the zirc fitting on the drag link...this one:

Haven't looked yet, but will prolly have to replace it unless I can file the threads open enough to get the nut on.

Hey. Just for a little education for the future so you understand the terminology. I don't believe you were talking about a zirc fitting here. The picture shows the ball joint on the end of your drag link. A zirc fitting is the little nipple thing that you attach a grease gun to so that you can pump grease into a ball joint, bearing, bushing, etc.

Also, next time you need to hammer on a ball joint or something similar, leave the nut on, just barely extended past the end of the ball joint threads. Thay way, if you damage something with the hammer, it will be the nut, which is cheaper and easier to replace. Plus, when the ball joint pops free, it will only drop as far as the nut will allow. It keeps things from flying around.

You are absolutely right. I was talking about the thing the zirc fitting is threaded into. I didn't know what to call it. I didn't think it was a ball joint so I just "wung" it - (past tense for wing it). So thanks for making me smarter. So what is it? A bushing? And how do you get them out to replace them? Ball joints I can figure out from another string, but the drag link or center link - that has to be a bushing? As I was filing the threads back to life and putting the nut back on, it dawned on me that I should have left the nut on and hit the nut instead of the threads DUH.

I am serious.

LOL! That's what scares me. I think we'd have too much fun.
I'm seriously looking at blasters. I could really use one.

The springs arrived yesterday -- big thanks to Uncle Gump for the great price he gave me on the springs and shocks.
Anyway the springs are installed with a 1-inch washer lift which. by all accounts, should give me a 1-1/2-inch lift .
The shocks will be here on Monday which is strange since both packages (the springs and shocks) arrived at the UPS Distribution Center on the same truck and were processed two minutes apart.
