I have found a 28/35 with 4.10 gears that would be a good replacement for my 28. My question is could the pumpkin be replaced with a 35 later without changing a bunch more parts; axle shafts, housing etc?

You will need the replace the inner axle shafts along with the Pig, other than that, it should be the same.

So you found a D35 hybrid and want to swap the entire axle in place of your D28?

I'd do it. The hybrid is a considerable upgrade from the D28. Not to mention the 4.10's are an added bonus. Get a rear axle with that?

Now to actually upgrade to a true D35 you'd just have to replace the hybrid chunk with the true D35 chunk (ring and pinoin, carrier, and housing) along with the inner shafts. Everything else is the same.

Allready have 4.10s. Figured the 28/35 would be an easy swap with matching gears. Later get the 35 pumpkin/axles shafts with 4.10. Till I change them at least the hubs, u joints and brakes are improved.

Improved compared to what?

His D28?

everything from the u-joint out is the SAME as a "Real" D35 and to be honest the "weak link" on the 28 was always the U-joint "ears" on the shafts anyway.

So a D28/35 "hybred" fixes most of that is wrong with the D28 anyway.

DO remember that swapping to the hybred is going to cost you EITHER a modified front driveshaft OR force you to convert to a 13-54 T-case (boo freaking hoo.)

Yeah, his D-28.

I see the hybrid as a considerable step up from the D-28.

I always thought people complained of trashing outer shafts on the D28?

The hybrid does eliminate the u-joints as the weak link. The small 23 spline ends inside the diff will most likely be the next weak spot (these shafts are not easy finds in a junkyard though).

+1, That's why I wouldn't run one, that and the lack of locker options.

It is a HUGE upgrade. The part everyone breaks on a D28 is gone. What's better than that? I would put one in my truck. I wouldn't worry about the ring gear or splines. This has always been Ford's problem. They bean count for a year or two but never seem to see the bigger picture. It's a waste to have spent this much energy and money building a special housing and inner shafts so they could use up some other parts. They spent about 2 years on it and drew a dozen $80,000 salaries away from other things. Then they can't get rid of it because of the investment. They have had that history. That method of though has been the bane of Ford and of the US government.

All the good parts are in that hybrid thing. It's worth it.

It's still got the front driveshaft too. I get a discount at the yard so I'll try to pick up the whole thing then. Thanx all!
