I was driving back from school today and my ranger took a dump on me, in traffic,..... in the rain. Doesnt get any worse that that... I have a 91 ranger xlt 5spd manual with about 140k on it. I drive it pretty easy i think....About an hour ago, my truck made a loud CRACK sound, like metal breaking. then the truck proceded to idle like crap and make a rhythmic metal banging sound in sync with my RPM. I thought it was a rod bearing at first, then i revved it and it sounded like connecting rod slapping the piston. I drove it about 2 miles to park it, and it never started for me again. My question is this,... i bought it 3 years ago for 1300 bucks, iv put about 40k or 50k on it since i bough it, so i kind of feel like iv got my moneys worth out of it. What do you think is a better choice? Id have to pay a pretty penny to gut the motor/motor rebuild, or should I just dump the thing? Id give it to the tow company for the cost of the tow? Its currently not running, it wont start, just continues to crank. Im pretty sure its a rod, when it was sputtering, it had NO power, and throttle made the left side of the engine area CLACK. More throttle ment faster and louder clacking. Any idea what it costs to have a rod replaced? Im asuming the rod chewed up the rest of the cyinder wall and made a mess in there. Any suggestions? Im in san diego county and shops arent cheap around here. I would love to work on it myself but im in school again, and thats out of the question right now.

Sounds like it has granaded bud. Frankly, I would want to rebuild or put in a replacement motor. This all depends on your plans for it and how good of shape the body is.

Besides loving these trucks as a reason to do it, I would do it because you know where the truck has been and whats wrong with it. Like its little quirks.

When you buy a new car, you sometimes buy someone elses problem.

Yeah, you could probably get a used engine and drop it in yourself...if it's automatic you could probably have it replaced in a day...if it's standard and you want to change the clutch it might take you a day also...just like jhammmel85 said...if it's worth keeping...go for it...

I took a peek at under the hood yesterday and saw some shiny looking metal, perhaps freshly broken, poking out of the right side (as your looking at it) I said screw it and called a few tow truck places. I ended up getting 300 bucks for it. thats all i asked for, probably could have got 500 cause my stereo was in it, i didnt care, just speakers and a older sony head. Atleast thats off my mind now. Thanks for the suggestions guys.
