dial rod for ring and pinion gears?

i am having a shop regear my axles and they called today and said they couldnt finish it because there is a dial rod in there and i need to get a new one. does anyone know what this is or where i can find one?

No such thing as a dial rod. Find out what they're talking about or tell them to package it up and you'll take it somewhere else that won't screw you around.

dowell rod? do you mean the center cross pin? or the bolt that holds it in?

we can't tell you until you get some clarity from them.. get a description from the shop

what gear ratio, and what all are they trying to do? If over a certain ratio, to do it "right" you need a notched cross pin which could be what they are talking about, but the easiest/strongest way is to take a dremel to the offending ring gear tooth and use the stock cross pin.

That is probably what they are talking about. I know the guy that is putting them in and he is very good. I got a message from his seceratary so I haven't talked to him personally. They are 4:10 gears.

well mine just got regeared, and my cousin(hes a mechanic) didnt had to gring anything to fit the cross pin back(stock one) and i got 4.10 gears

Well he said the gears I have are an 1/8 in thicker than the stock gears and the crosspin only goes about half way down. I don't want to be grinding anything because I have to drive this truck 10 1/2 hours every 3 months and I don't need somthing getting messed up. Does any one know where I can find a notched crosspin?

If you had 3.73 gears before, you already had a notched cross-pin.

Grinding the tooth on the ring gear down doesn't hurt anything and it's way stronger than running a notched cross-pin. This is also the preferred method of Randy's Ring and Pinion.

A good rearend guy would already know about doing this type of stuff. The very tip of the gear tooth where you grind never makes contact with the pinion gear (I ground my 5.13 gear 5 years and 30K miles ago, not one issue with it).

But if you're willing to risk a broken pin... Then the same place you got your gears from should also have notched pins. Like everyone else here, I also don't recommend using them.

Not that same particular problem, no. But you got a whole myriad of other problems yet to come afterward on that axle though lol.

(hint, better to get yourself a D35 and if needed, regear that instead)
