I'm gathering parts for a 4.0L clutch swap in my 2.9, and I've noticed that Ford changed the hydraulic throw out bearing/slave cylinder assembly starting in 1993 (Up to 1992 use one style of bearing/cylinder, and 1993-2000 use another).

The two units appear outwardly quite similar - aside from the fact that the early uits are metal and the later models are plastic. Does anyone know if the units are interchangable (meaning do the hyraulic fittings match up, pedal function properly with the master cylinder, etc.).... and if so, which ones are more preferable to use?

Also, I have noticed through my research that most companies list different part numbers for the 1990-1992 4.0L and 1993-1997 clutch kits, even on sets that don't include a new throwout bearing. The 4.0L lists only one flyweel from 1990-1996, and everything else appears identical aside from the throw out bearing/slave cylinder changeover... so I'm not sure what (if anything) is different in these clutch kits.

If anyone can shed some light on what these differences are, I would certainly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance,

-Hans

the quik connect on the slave cylinder is different. when i changed mine on my 99 4.0. the sold me the on for 92 and old wicth has a shorter connector. so i had to pull everything back out and get the right one for 93 and new wicth has a longer connector. the differnce in size is about and 1/8 inch.

hope this help.

I wondering the same thing in regards to clutch kits why there is a year break for Pre 93 and post 93

I lucked out when I pulled an M5OD from a 91 Explorer to find the 93+ slave and hydraulic line rather than the earlier units.

it has to do with a redesign that changed the volume of fluid needed to release the clutch.
