What 2.9 tranny is the strongest.

I heard i have the weaker one and would just like to beef it up..

Im getting my 2.9L rebuilt (280,00 miles) and would like to just take the tranny out too....

Might as well when the engine is out right?

Do you have an automatic or a manual? Do you want to swap from auto to manual/ vice versa?

He has a manual and the M5OD is the strongest RBV 4-6 cylinder tranny there is.

an M5OD-R1HD is actually a little stronger than the standard M5OD, and being that it backed the SOHC 4.0...it should bolt to a 2.9. that is if you can find one...and its probably a little more trans. than you need really.

the standard M5OD will handle anything your little 2.9 can throw at it.

The C5 is potentially the strongest as it can be upgraded with anything available to the C4--which can be upgraded to survive a 1,000hp alcohol injected 460.

My credo
A properly suspensioned Ranger can be safely airborne for up to 4 seconds at a time! =:O

Uh, and that C5 will BOLT UP to his 2.9L (Cologne?)???

Thinking about re-doing a 5.0 Mustang w/ C5... yeah baby!

Don't there is little excuse to use a C5 with a 5.0 in a Ranger

Except to use the stock T-case, and then because of transmission
and engine length issues you'll still usually need custom driveshafts.

Frankly, before I'd use a C5 just to hang a 13-50
or 13-54 behind a 5.0 I'd run a different T-case.

Like a C4/Dana20 combo out of a shoebox Bronco
(I know, hard to find but I've already got one)

Failing that an AOD and an NP205
(I know only 2.05:1 low range but what do you
need lower gears for with a V8?)

They came behind 83-84 2.8's, so they should bolt up just fine.

I am putting one with a C4 V-8 bellhousing behind my 289 in my Ranger. You can go the other way and put the C5 extension housing on the C4 as well, which is what I would have prefered... but the guy that had the tranny before me set it up this way.
