Explorer 8.8 Fluid Capacity

Yo,
Working on the explorer 8.8 swap in my truck the other night and was wondering if anyone knew the stock fluid capacity? So far we have put in a gallon and it is not coming out the hole. Seemed like a little much, but it is the explorer 8.8 and maybe it has a larger capacity than the ranger 8.8s

I seem to recall with a stock cover it's just under 3 quarts. Aftermarket covers could certainly make it as much as a gallon though.

Should the fluid be going down the tubes as well? I always thought so to lubricate the outer axle bearings.

Just looked in the '97' Explorer shop manual and it says 5.5 pints which would be close to what 4x4junkie said. Really can't see a gallon going in. Something doesn't seem right.

I just did the axle swap a week ago on my 95 ranger. got a nice 1999 explorer rear axle and cleaned it up, resealed it and installed in 2 days. when we added the fluid, we used just about 3 quarts ( had a little leftover we pooled together from each bottle)

i did, however have a big brake issue afterwards, and still do, but the diff fluid was just about 3 quarts guaranteed.

Is there supposed to be a seal that keeps the fluid from traveling down the axle tubes?

Also depends on how high the pinion is rotated.

Ah there we go, I did have to point it up a little higher than stock to get the pinion angle correct.
