You would atleast have the capability of limited slip as opposed to one wheel spinning. But if you are wanting to go that far I would look for an 8.8 from an Explorer with an LS already in it.

He answered your question?

It would be better than an open diff, but it is still gonna be 2wd.

I'd suggest looking for an 8.8 in a junkyard with a L/S from the factory. Much easier upgrade, much cheaper, plus you get a little bit bigger brakes. Probably half to one third as much money as dropping a full carrier replacement limited slip in the boat anchor 7.5.

Your on road wet traction will improve on hills if you are use to doing the one wheel peel. Another way to look at it is a 100% increase in traction (1 wheel to 2 wheels)

That would be true if the TrueTrac was a locker and the user got 100% lockup.

But it is a limited slip and 100% lockup is impossible. One wheel will still slip some though it will be less so versus an open diff.

I'm trying to get a feel for how big of a difference for winter driving specifically with open/lsd/auto locker. Just from browsing around it looks like the powertrax is a better deal than a truetrac or other lsd for new stuff, on the other hand if an 8.8 lsd out of an explorer will work good enough and bolts in easily enough, then I'm sure I would probably do that. Keep in mind I've got sand bags and decent tires but obviously still have traction issues sometimes. Would an 8.8 lsd be a decent enough improvement for the money in your opinion?

I would just look for a Ranger 7.5 or 8.8 with factory limited slip and whatever gearing floats your boat. Poke new clutches in it and go. Then it would be a bolt in swap instead of dinking around with a heavier axle that you really don't need.

With a good clutch type limited slip it will lock both wheels together but when the clutches brake loose you are back to square one plus the non spinning tire trying to help a little.

But then there are times it is nice to only spin one tire too... I about slid my brothers L/S truck into a tree and had to put it in 4wd, my open diffed truck spun a tire a little but marched right up the trail.
