I just replaced the wheel bearings about a month ag. I just checked the rear and the passanger side has a bit of play already. I had pulled the. 3rd member before this to install tube seals and noticed the bearing adjusters were a little loose. I tightened them up and it was fine. Does it ned a rebuild? Should I give up and sell it for a nice profit? I only paid a couple hundred for it.

I'd check the housing first and make sure it isn't bent. If it checks ok then a complete rebuild wouldn't hurt.

How would I go about checking its straightness?

I had a 9" that came out of a wreck that ate tires and bearings. You could run a string through the housing and take measurements. Can't think of anyway to do it loaded.

How is the bearing surface on the shaft? If its pitted or marred it will toast bearings.

9'' uses a tapered roller bearing that's held on the shaft with a shrink-ring.it doesn't use the shaft as an inner bearing like the 8.8.

as stated earlier, the most likely cause would be a bent housing or a bent axle.

I think I'm going to have to pull the 3rd member, because I move the wheel and I hear clunking from the 3rd member.

It turns out the one bearing cap on the passenger side was not the original, so it was not machined to match the 3rd member, allowing the bearing to move 1/16 of an inch, enough to cause failure in the wheel bearing. Fixed it, hope it holds up.
I'm probably going to sell the rear after I repaint it.
