i have a 1993 ford ranger 4x4 5spd 4.0 when you start the truck it bucks and dies if you dont hold the gas enough to keep it from dying, up until running temperature. you can smell gas fumes strong and it back fires quiet a bit. Thanks in advanced.

update: new plugs and plug wire replaced coil pack along with sensor on side. cleaned maf sensor along with iac sensor. im at a stand still i dont know what else it would be. new fuel filter and oil change and oil filter

Well, I don't what you mean by "sensor on side" or "iac sensor".

I'd replace the IAC and the oxygen sensor to start.

Jim, do the 93 4.0's have the same type of fuel regulator as the 89 2.9's ?? that was my problem. (just trying to be helpful, but have no idea about the 93's

i replaced the coolant sensor today and it ran great on first start up. but i started it up again about 15 mins later and it was stuttering again i noticed the water in the radiator was a rusty color (about the color of red mud) im going to flush it today or tomorrow.

There it is. Sounds like you pretty much got it handled.

If the CTS reads the bottom of its ranger, that's -40*F. It won't set the CEL, because the computer thinks it really is that cold. It takes an amazing amount of fuel to run a engine at that temp, thus why it ran so rich. It is also known to foul spark plugs and ruin converters.

Also note that most vehicles have 2 CTSs, one with a single wire for the qauge, and one with 2, 3, or 4 wires for the computer.

Does the CEL come on when it runs rough, and are there any codes? I wouldn't think it's an oxygen sensor, because it would do it more often than just on cold startup. As mentioned earlier, there is more than one CTS. Did you replace the one for the computer, and was it an OEM part? I've had bad luck before using aftermarket parts for sensors like that, and ended up having to put in an OEM sensor to fix the problem. I would check the IAC again, and maybe the IAT sensor. Scan it for codes if you can, I've had problems before that threw a code but didn't put on the CEL. Good luck!

A cup of water with ice, is 99% of the time almost exactly 32*F. Drop the sensor in and check resistance.

No point in buying only Motorcrap sensors, just check em first. Although the only sensors I put in are Borg Warner, NGK or OEM, never Delco or parts store's "house brand".

Fuel pump, or hose from fuel pump to sending unit.

Check your fuel pressure.

I'm actually starting to wonder if it might not be a fouled or weak injector.

is there a screen before the maf. i think there is supposed to be. and it is important that it is there because the sensor is designed to read diffused air. if that looks ok put a new MAF sensor on it.
