Yeah but the colonge family as a whole was around from 61-2011 or whatever....aaaaand exactly how I knew you'd answer.
The only thing I have on my side, which you don't, is that when a manufacturer comes up with a product that is a hit in sales, or works and lasts far better than they expected, they continue using it for a loooong time. The 302 design being a perfect example of that.
The 2.9 cylinder head design certainly wasn't continued... In fact, it was redesigned once, and then DISCONTINUED.
Also, using internet forums and a couple of supposed ford techs who pry were sloshed in a bar one night is not exactly reliable.
No one comes online to trumpet "oh my 2.9L is great and its been trouble free for 260,000 miles!"...no...they come online looking for help when a problem arises. Ill gurantee you the number of 2.9 problems you find online is roughly the same as any other engine.
Yes the 2.9s head is a weak design, but it doesnt mean it isnt still a damn good little engine. Like i said, youre entitled too yours and me mine.
The 2.9 was simply redundent and not needed. The 3.0 was smoother, quieter, etc and would work in the ranger, aerostar, windstar, taurus, whatever. It made more sense to hang onto then the 2.9, espicially considering most rangers had 4 cylinders or 4.0s anyways.
