You would be best to get someone to do this for you. It also needs to be pinpointed as to it's exact location. If you get someone to turn the wheel while you look in there, ONLY LOOK, use a flashlight to see better, if you must touch something use a stick, a long stick. Odds are it will be the pump but it still shouldn't hurt to look if you have some proper help

I like this idea !! I dont know what I would be looking for? Is that belt supposed to turn when the wheel turns? This sounds like a good learning opportunity! thanks Josh B !

Look for noises, don't just start poking stuff! ;)
Yes, the belt turns the pump which pressurizes the power steering
I put some photos of the Explorer pump, which is hiding behind the pump bracket, which also holds the AC compressor, it's tucked in there pretty well and I don't think noises will help much there. if it's making noises it's probably bad

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.

The belt turns all the time that the engine is running. It's turning the pump that creates hydraulic fluid pressure that is used to make it easier for you to tunr yhe wheels.

This is very helpful! Hopefully I will be able to check it out in the next couple days! I dont have AC so that might make it easier to ID the pump :)

thanks for the support!

I am back again! here's what I found out. I had someone turn the wheel and I listened. the pump is LOUD!~ also I felt for vibrations in the wheels.. which were there (not sure what that is about) I did notice on the right wheel as it was moving there was a "thump thump thump" sound.

I wonder if i can attach the video.. you might not be able the hear the "thump " over the loud power steering pump.

can't get the video to up load.. darn.. :)

Video needs to be hosted somewhere else, such as YouTube. Then you post the link here.

Is there a belt on that? I didn't see one. Sounds like a timing gear or timing gear with a worn out chain, or maybe a simple metal to metal rubbing, as in metal against a pulley.
You need someone knowledgeable to listen to that for you, a stick will not work with moving parts
It does not sound encouraging Qk :/

Who else has listened to that for you in person KQ and what did they tell you?
What is their relationship/interest, as in friend or mechanic etc

Get you some cheap leather gloves, turn OFF the engine, take OUT the key, CLOSE the drivers door
USE those gloves, on your hands, and reach in and grab those pulleys and wiggle each one, use some force with it, See if Any are showing any sign of being loose.
Get a friend to do it if they are more certain of their inspection skills

That may be your only hope of an easy way out
