Hello all,

Forgive me if this has been asked.

I bought my '83 ranger with the original fuel pump (mechanical) removed and a cheap electric pump installed along the frame.

This pump is now toast, so now my question is, do I revert it back to the original mechanical pump setup? Are these pumps unreliable, hence the swap to electric?

Or should I replace it with another electronic pump? And if so, which brand/setup do you all recommend?

Just some specs, I have an 2wd 83 single cab, single tank, duraspark swapped 2.8l with a autolite 2100 carb and a 4 speed transmission.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Mechanical pump would be best and most reliable

Not sure why someone would replace it with an electric pump in a carbureted vehicle

Electric pumps had to be used when fuel injection was used because EFI needs at least 30psi fuel pressure to work, mechanical pumps are limited to about 10psi

Electric pumps also have the safety issue of continuing to pump out gasoline if there is a roll over or accident, which is why there are two safety shutoff switches in EFI vehicles, fuel pump relay and the inertia switch

Iirc, the reason for the swap is because the mechanical pump is a royal pain in the rear to get at.
